This image would be good for my double page spread because i think that it fits in with the theme of rock. It has a a black background making the faces stand out more. It is a mid shot which would be good because the readers will be bale to connect with them because the people in the image are looking directly at the shot. I used dark make up on one of the band members so that she will appeal to people who support strong rock culture. Where as the other band member has less noticeable make up so that she will also appeal to people who do not support a strong rock culture. Therefore i will be appealing to a wider audience. The people in the image are looking up the camera this makes the reader feel Superior to them, however the image remains strong by having very strong looks on their faces. This is also something that is also associated with rock culture.

This is a very different shot that shows them using an eight track which will allow them to alter their music and create albums. This will appeal a lot to readers because it shows that the band make music that can be bought or downloaded. This image would be suitable for my double page spread because it shows the band out of context which will complement the text which will be an interview with the band.

This is more of a closer shot of the band relaxing, this will allow readers to relate. They are looking directly at the camera and this will inable readers to make an instant conection with the band members. They are sat on the black leather sofa which will fit with the genre of my magazine. They are holding alcohol, this will appeal more to the older end of my age range. The back wall behind the sofa is very dirty, this will relate to their care free image.

This shot is a long shot and shows all the singer, she is standing at an angle. This creates a different atmosphere because it looks a lot more like she is really singing and so readers will feel more as though she is performing. her hair is covering her face so this will be make it more difficult for readers to make a conection. The place that she is now standing gives readers more of a view of the garage however there is a reflection shingin on the back wall and on parts of the singer. There are also posters and pictures on the wall. We can really see that the garage is messy and readers may realate to this because rock often has a care free image.

This is a Picture of just the guitarist, this would be suitable for my double page spread. This image will appeal to any readers who play an instrument. The guitarist is very young and will appeal to the younger end of my age range. She is also singing in this shot, i thought that this would create an atmosphere of a relaxed rehearsal which readers could relate to. People who are strongly into music will usually follow a band and feel a connection with them so by creating this atmosphere readers would feel more involved.
I chose to do another mid shot but i positioned the two band members differently. Both the singer and the guitarist are stood back to back to show that they are both of an equal status in the band. It also shows that they are a very close band. The people in this image are taking up most of the shot and therefore you can not see very clearly what the background is. However there is still some of the ceiling and you can see that it is some sort a garage which is very rock because rock culture can often mean danger and mess which is whats its like in most garages. The people in the image are both females this is interests men because men like to look at attractive woman. It will also appeal to females because they will be able to relate to the image. The girls are of a similar age to my age range. This will be a good photo for my front cover because it shows a band practising which fits with the theme of music and it also has a rock essence which fits with the genre of my magazine.
I chose to do a mid shot because i wanted to try and range of different shots and a mid shot would look good on my front cover because readers would be able to see what the band were doing with out feeling to distanced from them so they would still be able to make a connection with the image. I set the picture in a shed that is used by teenage boys, i thought this would be a good setting because it is the kind of place that most bands start practising. Therefore any readers who are in a band or know someone who is would relate to this image. It is very dark in the shed and so it fits with the genre of my magazine. I had the singer of the band standing nearer the front because people generally would know the singer of a band to me be more well known and therefore readers would recognise them instantly. the guitarists is still in the shot but is slightly behind the singer. The singer is singing onto a microphone and has her hand on her head, this is to show that she is concentrating a lot on her singing and feels passionate about it. The guitarist is looking at his guitar, this is to show that the band are still practising and this fits with the setting of the garage. The singer is dressed in black and grey, these are very rock style colours. She is wearing a leather jacket which is a material often associated with the rock image. The guitarist has got on the a very colourful dress however it is patterned with images and she is wearing a black shirt over the top. This look is more known to indie rock which my magazine will have elements of in. If i use this picture i will need to crop out the open door of the garage.

Fonts

I picked six different possible fonts that i could use for my Brand logo. I then went and asked 10 people what they thought, Algerian was the most popular choice and
Old Englisg text MT was the second. Algerian is a lot clearer to read and fits in with more modern rock as apose to Old English text MT, which is more classic rock. My age range is 15-35 and so Algerian would be more siuted as they will be more in tune with modern rock. Algerian is a serif font and is clear to read.

Flat plan: Contents page

This is the flat plan for my contents page. The grid of the layout of the page will be split into four boxes, two on the top and two underneath. I decided to start with an image in the top left box because i had seen this on the contents page of a Kerrang magazine. The person in the image will have spiky hair and dark eyeliner with a pattern going down his face. this is very common amongst the 'emo' subculture and they are known for listening to rock music. therefore the image will be related to my genre. Next to his face will be the words 'Get the look' this will make readers believe that the magazine knows what the look is and will want to find out. I will then put a navigation element underneath the writing. In the top right hand box there will be the word contents, this will be in the font Old English text MT because this is a very rock style writing because it is rugged. I have used simple bullet points when listing the contents, it will be in a serif font and none of it will be bold apart from the navigation elements witch will be in a different colour to the other text. The text will all run down the page in consistent way. The bottom left hand box will have 'Your Pics' written at the top, this will make the readers feel more involved with the magazine. There will be four pictures underneath the writing and they will all be scattered in a random style way. they will have frames edges similar to the images on the contents page that i analysed from NME. They will be images of fans that will be dressed in rock stlye clothing. At the bottom of the box will be an e-mail adress and the words 'keep sending in your pics' this is so that anyone who reads the magazine will know that they can be involed too. The bottom right hand box will have the heading ' On the cover' listed underneath this will be all stories from the main cells on the front cover. The box will be set in the same way as the contents box. the background for this page will be red with streeks of black lines just like the conents page from Rock sound that i analysed. I chose to do use this because it looked very effective because the red not only symbolises danger but it is also very eye catching, and the black will keep the page the theme of rock.

Flat plan: Double page spread

The grid layout to this double page spread will be split into three uneven columns, much like the double page spread from NME that I analysed.I chose this style because it gives a simple layout to place my image, body text and side panel. The first column will contain the main image for this page, which will be of the same band that will be on the front cover. They will be sat relaxing, also a lot like in the main image of the double page spread that I analysed for NME. I chose this because I thought that it looked very effective because it showed the band in a different light and therefore made readers more interested to see what the text was going to be saying about them. On the top of the page between columns one and two I will have the band's name in bold writing. Underneath their name will be the word 'unleashed', this will be in the same font as the brand logo on the cover. It will also have the same shattered glass effect which will make the word stand out more. The middle column will be between both pages and will have a small rule of thirds. Within the middle column there will be three smaller columns containing the body text. The text will be an interview with the band in the image and will start with a drop capital and then will have the name of the band member that answers that question before then going on to say what he said. This will be clear for the reader to follow. Behind the text will be a white background and the text will be black, so that it is easy to read. Between the second and third smaller columns will be a pull quote with a black background and white writing. The last column on the page layout will be the smallest and will contain five boxes each with something else to do with the band that was not mentioned in the body text. The fifth box in the last column will have a navigation element to turn to the next page, however it will not say what will be on the next page. This will be to make the reader more interested to see what it will be and therefore keep reading. The background for the first two columns on the page will be in white but the last column will be black. The fonts for the body text will be serif because that is easier to read when your confronted with lots of words in one place, and any headings on the page will sans serif. The Band name, which will be Old School, will be in a different colour and style to the rest of the writing and the 'unleashed' will be in bold read writing so that people see that it as being dangerous and interesting.

Flat plans: Second cover

This is my second flat plan. The layout is different from my previous flat plan, the brand logo is the same and takes the same appearance as my previous cover however, behind the logo there will be an image which will give the effect of broken glass. I chose this because i saw this behind the masterhead of a Kerrang magazine and i thought it was very effective because it symbolised danger and that is often linked with Rock. Next to the Brand logo there will be an image of an electric guitar because that is a very rock instrument and anyone who is in a band will be able to relate. Above the title i will have a strap line and the background for the strap line will be black, the same colour as the text of the brand logo. The writing in the tag line will be a continuous line of band names with a small dot in between each one to show the separation between the band names. I have chosen the tag line to go at the top of the magazine because people will see the title and if they are not sure what the magazine will be about they will be able to see that it will be featuring bands so therefore will be looking at music. On the left hand side i will have the main cells, i have put them in a column that will also have the same background colour as the tag line this will assure that the cover keeps the theme. people will also be able to see things more clearly if there is a pattern. All of the writing that will be against a black background will be written in white so that it can be easily read and will also stand out and catch peoples eye. The main image will be of two band members, one playing a guitar and the other one singing. They will be dressed in black clothing and have lots of black eye make up on. This will also link in with the theme of rock. The background will be white so that it will contrast with the main image. The main flash will be the band name and will be written across the image in a different colour writing so it will be eye catching and people will be more likely to read it if it brakes away from the usual theme because they will see it very clearly. At the bottom of the column on the left hand side will be a box that says 'Plus', this will be a small box that fits in with the column but will have a white background and black text, underneath the word plus will be the word free in red, bold writing and then underneath that will be a small image of a poster with the words poster written across it. Beside the image will be an other column going along the bottom of the magazine, this is very similar to my first flat plan but will contain extras that the magazine offers rather than main cells. The fonts on this page will differ, the headings on the main cells will be sans serif and the text underneath will be serif. The band names inside the strap line will be in bold and in sans serif. The rest of the text will be in the same pattern as the main flash, any headings will be in bold and sans serif and any surrounding text will be in serif.

Flat plans: First cover

This is my first design. I have used the title Top of the Rocks as my brand logo because Top of the Pops is a very well known Name in the music industry and amongst the older half of my age range. People know that Top of the Pops is a show that used to show the top pop music for that week, they also brought out a magazine that talked about the top pop music and and artists. Therefore people will instantly know that my magazine will be along the same lines, but with Rock. In this flat plan i have decided not to use a tag line because the Rock in Top of the Rocks bigger than the rest of the because this is the genre of music that the magazine will be based on. The word Rocks will also be in big bold text so that it will catch peoples eye. The background behind the title will be all white and then the underneath the title will be a black background where the main image and main cells will be. The main image will be a singer of a band, they will be singing into a microphone. This will fit into the music theme of the magazine. The singer will be dressed in black and will have very rock style, this will engage people with a rock fashion making it a wider audience. Just above the image will be the main flash and this will be the name of the band that the singer will be from, it will be in a different text to the brand logo. The main cells will have a heading in bold witting and then a brief description about what the story will be about underneath. They will be on the left and the image will be more to the right. On the bottom left hand corner of the image there will be the word free in big bold red letters so that people will feel that they are getting more for there money by given people a free item when they spend money on the magazine. Underneath the word free will be a box that will have an image of a some kind of band but you wont be able to make out the band because there will be a Poster written across it and just above the image so that people who want to see the poster will need to buy the magazine in order to view the poster. At the bottom of the cover there will be a strap line that will have four columns on with a strip of different colour that will have names of bands in so people can know what bands will feature in the magazine. In the columns there will be bullet point and quotes of things that will be inside and navigation elements.

contents page

This is a contents page for Rock Sound. It has been split into two clear columns, with mostly text on one side and mostly images on the other. The left hand side is slightly smaller than the right and has the top section for the date and issue number as well as the word 'contents'. The style of writing and ripped and torn, this fits with their genre of rock, this carry's on to the navigation elements next to the images. They also have the Number 70 in big writing making the reader think they are getting a lot for their money. Underneath the list of sub headlines and navigation elements are split into sections making it very easy to read and to locate pages. They have the main words in bold so as to hightlight there importance. There is a light grey background behind the list and the headings are in red strips. On the the right hand side of the page there the background is red with black streaks, the red gives of a dangerous effect. The writing at the top of the column has the brand logo and tag line written in white to contrast with the red background. The rest of the column is filled up with images, they are on ripped paper with graffiti style writing for the page navigation's. There are small white boxes at the bottom of each image to say what the image is representing. All of the colours are mostly red white and black this keeps the theme throughout the page. At the bottom of the page there is a web adress for the magazine, this is to offer the readers all the information they can and to get them to visit their website if they want anymore information.

Double page spread

This is a double page spread for NME. The font they have used very basic fonts, the font sizes vary from very large very small. they have used sans serif for some of the larger fonts but the sub headings have been written in serif. The fonts are only in black or white. the main colours for the pages are blue black and white, the boys in The image are wearing black which links with some of the black font. The language is informal because their target audience is fairly young. The image represents the typical teenager, it shows three teenagers being lazy. They are dressed mostly in dark colours to show they are a rock band. The band is known internationally and are still very young, this will appeal to NME's younger readers. They all look bored and very relaxed. The photo takes up the space of one hole side of the double page and the heading spreads across both pages. At the bottom left hand Conner there is a small box with some information about the the people in the image, this will keep the readers interested because they will wont to know more about people. On the second page they have a two column article, the aticle beggins with a drop capital to draw attention to the writing. Inbetween the two columns there is a pull quote in the middle with a background that is the same colour as the background of the information box on the first page. Readers will be able to instantly see that this will be interesting information too. Next to the article is a column with three separate articles and images in. the background too all of these is black with some blue, these keeps the colour theme. The fonts on the page all vary, in the top hand conor they have the name of the band and it is in bold and sans serif, But the main flash on the page is in serif as is the body text. The writing on the side panel is in sans serif. The information box in the left hand conor is all in sans serif.

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

This is a typical cover for Kerrang. It is called Kerrang because that is the noise that a guitar makes when you strum it and guitars are often associated with rock music. The text of the title is fractioned text and looks like a glass that smashed. All of the text is in sans serif and most text is in either black or white.
Similar to the last cover it has a main heading in the middle, it is in large and bold. There is a tag line under the main heading which is in red and an italic font. They have used a wide range of colours on this cover, but the main colour is black, which is used for the top and bottom background. However, the middle background is a light blue which looks like it could be representing the sky. I think they chose to use black alot becuase it is can also be acciated alot with rock culture. The heading in the middle matches the colours of the men in the picture's t-shirts, and the red tag line mathcing with the background to one of the main sells. They did not use any sentances on their cover just words that describe what is in the magazine. These words are informal and mostly names of bands with would suggest that most readers will have some knowledge of the subject area. They have made the word 'FREE' bold so that it will catch peoples eye and make them more intressted in buying the magazine if they feel they will be getting something free. I would say that this magazine has a slightly older age range to the other magazine because the bands mentioned in the strap line are older bands. I would sugest the age range is between 20-40. The camera is slighly facing up to them this shows that they are a higher status to readers. There is a barcode in the bottom left hand conner and the date is shown next to teh bar code, this is very simerlar to NME's barcode.

Monday, 2 November 2009

This front cover has the title not completely visible witch shows that the magazine has confidence in its self. this also shows that they have consistent readers. NME stands for new music express, i think they chose this because it is telling their readers that they have all the new and latest music. the colours are mostly dark apart from the name KASABIAN which is white. the dark colours match the main image because one of the men is very dark looking and has black hair and is wearing black clothes. the white matches the other man who is wearing a light blue t-shirt. i think they chosen these colours because thy big white writing makes the magazine stand out but the black keeps the theme of rock. The middle text is large and that's what draws the readers in, their title is in red and this is also a very eye catching colour and in sans serif.. The small black writing is made more visible by being placed against the light brown background. The language is informal and also assumes knowledge of the subject, for example, 'pavement reunion' only people who knew rock bands would know who Pavement were. There target audience would be aged between about 15-25 because the language is simple and the men in the image are probably of this age range too. This magazine costs £2.20 and is a weekly magazine so its target audience will need to have more disposable income and a lot of commitment to the magazine. The image of two men standing together shows that they are very close because one man has his arm round the other showing friendship. They men in the picture are from the band Kasabian, which is what the big writing in the middle says. The man on the left looks scruffy, this links in with their backdrop. They are both looking very serious this is probably because of the statement that is underneath their band name, they are making a very big statement and readers will see that they are being serious. The main sells are placed at the very edges of the page and consist of one large heading and then smaller text underneath. There is a bar code in the bottom right hand Conner and the date is written on the left hand side of the bar code.

Target Audience

This is the statistics for NME. It shows that their highest amount of readers are male and are upper class. The average age for their readers is 24. On their website it shows things that are associated with the readers, there were pictures of cars and laptops with supports their statistics for upper class readers. it also has images of games so we can see that the audience is laid back and have time on thier hands. ( http://www.ipcadvertising.com/resource/fd4e20nlh1xefkowjxdha4xu.pdf )

'Rock, goth, metal, punk, thrash, classic indie, unsigned bands, Stuart Cable & his big barnet'
I found this on http://www.kerrang.com/ it tells me a little bit about the kinds of music that the magazine is associated with. I also found on http://www.ipcadvertising.com/ that the Kerrang has more upper class readers, most of their readers are aged between 15 and 44.

After looking at these two magazines for inspiration i am going to make my target audience between middle and upper class. I will aim the age range to be from 15 to 35.

Main task intorduction

My task is to create the front cover, contents page and double page spread for a new music magazine. I will need to use my skills that i learned from completing my preliminary task.

Evaluation

I think that my magazine cover turned out how i wanted it to, but i found it difficult trying to use the software so my text is not all in the same font and i couldn't find all the coloures i wanted. Therefore i will need to familiarise my self with the software. I changed my contents page alot but i think that it now looks better than my origanal. I managed ot scan everything in ok and use blogger easily.

Contents Page

This is my final Contents page. I used the green stripe on the left hand side so that it would stick with the theme on the front cover, it also links in with the rule of thirds. I decided that instead of having small pictures after each heading i made one big picture and had it as the background. I forgot to put in the sub heading 'contents' but it would have been in the font as the title but it would have been yellow and in 36pt. the rest of the headings would have followed in the same pattern as the ones already on there. I made the page references a different colour to the heading because they will be easier to read.

Front Cover

This is my final front cover, i decided to only have two of the main sells because the cover would have looked to crowed as i needed the font to be bigger in order for it to be readable on first glance. I also decided to have one big picture as the entire background, this worked because it made the white title stand out more against the dark background. The writing over laps the picture but the background for the text is transparent so it does not interfere with the picture. My main sell is as the bottom of the page i like this because it looks different to the rest of the magazine and so it stands out. The green is the same colour green as the Sussex Downs theme and therefore matches with the blue of the background. The writing in the green box is the same colour and font scheme as the rest of the magazine so the theme stays the same. Not all of the fonts match exactly so i could have improved on making that better.

Flat plan for contents page.

On the left had side at the top is the title again but much smaller so that it links with the front cover. I have then put the sub heading 'Contents' in bold and then the rest of the text underneath in normal. the rest of the text will be bullet pointed so that it is easy for the reader to follow. after each story i will put a small image to give the page some colour and to make it look more interesting. the colours will match the colours on the front cover.

Flat plan for front cover.

This is my flat plan for my front cover. I called my magazine INFO because its short for information therefore the teachers will know that its all just information that they need to know. It is in a big font and also bold so that it will really stand out.
I also had all the headings for stories on the left hand side in bold so that they stand out to the reader and then the reader will be drawn in. I Will have all of the other text (apart from the title) in yellow because it is a bright colour and will stand out.

Photograph Two

I have chosen to use this image for the front cover of my magazine. I feel that it is just the right size and you can just see the Sussex downs logo. This photo was taken from straight on and will align with the other componants on the front cover. this will apleal to my target audience because it is a very standers picture and a student who is standing on front of the ...

Photograph One

I have chosen not to use this image for my front cover because she is not quiet central and even though you can see more of the Sussex downs sign in this you cant see all of it whereas in the other image you can see the Sussex down logo more clearly. This will tie in with logo on the top left had corner of the front cover. This image is also taken from slightly to far away therefore it is so large to be a medium close up. She is Standing at an angle and this would not fit in with the columns on my flat plan.

Intorduction

I have been asked to design a magazine cover and contents page for a Lewes magazine. I have aimed my magazine at staff members of Lewes.
